The Indian Police Service (IPS) works directly under Government of India and is one of the three All India Services. The Indian Police Service was formed in 1948 and is a civil service, which is controlled by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Indian Police Service has been formed to enforce law, maintain public peace and order, and detect, investigate and prevent crimes. It also takes up responsibilities like fulfilling border responsibilities; tackling smuggling, drug trafficking; disaster management and many others.

When and how is police recruitment done?
The police departments of the respective states of India do police recruitments. The selection of officers is done on professional merit basis, proven by the competitive examinations, which are conducted on a yearly basis. Police recruitment 2012 will happen for two groups – Group A consisting of gazetted officers such as Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of police, etc and Group B consisting of non-gazetted officers like Inspector of Police, Sub-inspector of Police, Police head constable etc, through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination.
The UPSC examination happens in three stages. The first stage is the preliminary examination, which must be cleared by the candidates to appear in the second round, which is the main examination. These two stages are then followed by an interview. Candidates, who clear the interview, will then join the cadre in any one of the states and start their police career in India.
What is the qualification required for a job in the Police department?
Having explored the possibilities of careers in the police department, we shall now see the qualifications required to obtain a job in the police department. Any graduation from a recognized college or university in India is the minimum qualification required to appear for UPSC. Final year students are also eligible to apply. Police career also demands qualities such as self-discipline, self-control during difficult situations and physical fitness.
The age limit has been set between 21 years and 30 years, for a police career through IPS examination. A relaxation of 3 years and 5 years is provided for OBC and SC/ST candidates respectively.
Physical qualification is also an important requirement for those aspiring for police jobs in India. The height for men is 165 cm and for women, it is 150 cm. A relaxation of 5 cm is provided for OBC and SC/ST candidates. Also, the candidate must be able to run 10 kms in one hour.
