About the city

It is situated at northern part of Karnataka in the Deccan plateau. Its distance from the main city of Bangalore is around six hundred sixty three kilometres. Bhamani rebuilt the fort which was made by Raja Guruchand with fifteen majestic towers. He renovated full mosque by changing it’s fully from interior. Now it covers thirty thousand square feet area with beautiful complex. This fort also contains 26 guns of which one was eight meters long. Mosque is famous for the tomb of Bande Nawaz. Bande Nawaz was a great Sufi saint, his tomb walls have paintings and its library consists of more than ten thousand books in Urdu, Arabic and Persian. It is also famous for the tomb of sultan Hassan and firoz shah and its structure. It is also famous for one of its temple known as The Shrine of Saint Sharana Basaveshwara because it was established by an eminent Hindu religious teacher. The city is also famous for its cotton production. It is a administrative centre incorporating preparation of flour, paint and oil.
What makes Gulbarga really interesting is its history. In history it was a part of Hyderabad till 1996.when it was given to Karnataka after re-organization of states than many of its districts were added to Mysore and 2 of its Taluks became part of Andhra Pradesh. Its history reveals with rashtrakutas control over chalukyas in 6th A.D. for 200 years. After rashtrakutas, Kalahari’s ruled this place till 12th century A.D. Kakatiya’s king took the power and formed there domain over Gulbarga and Raichur. In 1321, the entire southern region gave its full command to Muslim Empire. It resulted in Bahamani kingdom in Gulbarga. They divided it into five sultanates. The city is formed by two different districts that are Bidar and Bijapur.
It is located 700 metres above sea level. The main rivers flowing through this district are Krishna and bhima. It is covering a total area of sixteen kilometres. Its summer season starts from late February and ends in June. Monsoon season starts from late June and ends in September. Winter ends in mid January. Most of the people in the city prefer Kannada and Urdu.
